GENERAL ELECTIONS IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Following the results of the general elections in Palestine, the GWU Youths considers this mandate as a sovereign and free expression of the Palestinian people. Such move is a positive sign for democracy in the region, whilst encouraging active participation among the electorate in decision-making processes. In particular, the GWU Youths notes the direct involvement of youths and trade unions that should continue to embrace this spirit of active participation, also within the next few weeks during parliamentary elections in Israel scheduled for next March.

In addition though, the GWU Youths maintains that Hamas should assume its international obligations and responsibilities to lead a democratic government. Such could be achieved by cease-fire, fighting terrorism, and take up compromise for a possible peace deal with Israel.

Through its involvement in the Euro-Med Youth Trade Union Network, Euro-Med projects by the European Union, and by means of contacts with youth organisations in the Middle-East, the GWU Youths shall continue to foster a sense of solidarity and conflict-resolution, among young people to achieve a healthy progress in the region.
