Formerly known as the Chemical & General Workers' Section, it was founded in 1971 to represent the interests of the workers in the petrol, rubber and plastics industry.
Along the years, the Section continued to grow and expanded its trade union activity to reach workers from various sectors of the production industry. Today, the Section organises workers from the manufacturing and processing sector of wood, paper, cardboard, glass, ceramics, cement, tobacco, synthetics and pharmaceutical.
Due to a routine reshuffle amongst the sections of the General Workers Union, the Section came to represent also employees in the energy sector, mainly within the state-owned Enemalta Corporation, the largest puiblic corporation on the Island. Hence its name as the Chemical, Energy and Printing Section.
More recently, the National Council decided to adjust the duties of some of the Union's eight sections and as a matter of fact the section was relieved from representing also the beverage industry and the printing sector employees. In view of the Council's decision it came to be known as the Chemical and Energy Section.
