Manufacturing & SMEs

Formerly the Textiles, Garment & Leather Workers' Section caters for employees in the manufacturing sector of Textiles, garment and leather in Malta and Gozo.

The Section was established in 1970 when it's first Executive Committee met on October 20 of that year following a GWU's Council decision to set up a separate section for employees in this sector.

Normally, collective agreement are negotiated every three years. During such periods the section negotiates and concludes approximately 23 collective agreements covering more than 3500 workers which form the large majority of workers within this particular industry. A particular feature of the Textiles, Garment & Leather Section is that almost 75% of its members are female employees putting it on the forefront with the highest number of female members within the GWU.

The workers' representation on the shop floor is equally shared between males and females and this finds its significance in the fact that 50% of the seats on the Section's Executive Committee are held by women workers. This section is now known as the Manufacturing and SME's Section of the GWU.
