The precursor of the Metal and Construction Section was the
Admiralty Section when the Malta Drydocks was still under colonial rule
and known as the Admiralty and Naval Dockyard. The Admiralty Section
was in fact one of the first sections organised within the General
Workers Union. In 1959 by order of the British Naval Authorities the
Drydocks went commercial under the management of Baileys (Malta) Ltd.
This brought a transformation within the Admiralty Section and
consequently it was divided in two and the Metal Section emerged
covering at that time more than 6000 blue collar workers. The other
part of the Admiralty Section catered for employees who opted to stay
on the books of the British.
Later on the Metal Section included employees from the
private metal industry in Malta.
Today the Metal and Construction Section represent the
absolute majority of employees in the repair and shipbuilding
sectors, IPSL; a company which emerged after the restructuring
of Malta Drydocks and Malta Shipbuilding Co Ltd. and leading companies
in the construction industry. The Section is one of the
most active within the GWU and until recently it was the largest of the
eight trade sections forming up the
GWU.
