City Theatre

The original site plans of the Workers Memorial Building provided a space for an assembly hall. Eventually the construction of the WMB was completed and some years later it came to include a theatre well equipped with the necessary conference facilites, a stage proscenium arch, stage curtain and 650 theatre seats including the balcony.

Obviously the major activity in this conference hall is reserved for Union rallies, congresses, conferences, seminars, and meetings where attendance is over 100.

For small scale assemblies the Workers' Memorial Building has two halls in the upper floors. The Reggie Miller Hall is fully equipped with over-head projection and sound systems as necessary for meetings, seminars and tutorials.

From time to time and when it is deemed essential the stage of the Workers' Theatre will be converted to accomodate various presentations and performances.

It was practically here that the pioneering step was taken to bring in the traditional Maltese folksinging called "Ghana" from the endemic wine tavern to a legitimate concert theatre.

This type of concert became so popular that other entities have now included it in their regular cultural activities at national level.

Ghana has today become a respectable folk art with its own radio and television programmes and also the publishing of compact discs. What started as a one night stand at the Workers' Theatre is today an international Maltese link amongst the emigrants in various continents.

The theatre has been used also for song festivals in the vernacular for patriotic and workers' movements themes.

A joint venture with the Malta Labour Party was the launching of a drama school and theatre company called Politeatru. This company produced political legitimate theatre including original plays relevant to Malta and also world classics.

The Workers' Theatre was the home of this company for the first five years, after which is started touring and found its own venues. Their repertory includes Bertholt Brecht, Lopez de Vega and Dario Fó.

Recently, the theatre passed under a new management and has been renamed City Theatre
