The Port & Transport Section is one of the pioneering sections within the General Workers Union. It was set up way back in 1950. It's raison d'être is top safeguard the interests of both workers in the Aviation and Maritime sectors as far as their conditions of employment and their standard of living is concerned.
The Maritime Division comprises the Dockers (Port Workers), Crew members and staff of locally owned shipping companies such as Tug Malta and Gozo Channel Co. Ltd and other employees who depend on the port activity. This category of workers incorporates the Delivery and Tally Clerks Group, Licensed Port Foremen, Stevedores, Cargo Handlers and workers at the Malta Freeport.
The Aviation Division embraces workers from all categories at the Status-owned Airline Air Malta plc and the employees of the Malta International Airport plc, Malta AirTraffic services, Medavia, AirSupplies, Airport Services Ltd. amongst other entities.
The major task currently faced by the Maritime and Aviation Section is the Government's decision to privatise and liberalise the aviation industry and to restructure most of the maritime business .
